Catherine Ashton, EU High representative announced during her visit to Cairo last week, an initiave of EUR 4 million which will bring EU support for women's rights in Egypt up to EUR 11 million.
This initiative will support the ID cards project that we have heard about to 2 Million women across the country.
Ashton stated "It is the first and basic step to enjoy basic rights as an individual. We want to provide financial support to 18,000 poor women living in rural areas and 3,000 women living in the most impoverished areas of Cairo; and to work to reduce violence against women especially in urban areas."
This new project will be implemented by UN Women Egypt, headed by Mrs Maya Morsy.
"It is time for the transition to deliver for women of this country and for women across the world and it is an enormous privilege to say that we wish to work with you and to offer support not just from me but from the EU. I wish you every possible success and we will stand beside you every step of the way."
