Egypt first African Country to compete in European Solar Competition

The American University in Cairo is the first African and Middle Eastern university competing in a European competition in Madrid, Spain, this September. Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 is a worldwide contest where 20 universities compete for the design and construction of a self-sufficient house. The AUC intends to build a home which is energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable, naming the project Sustainable Living Interactive Design SLIDES.

The solar house combines Oriental architecture style with modern technology and techniques allowing passive cooling in a desert-like area. It has the ability to cope with extreme climatic conditions by using renewable energy sources like solar energy and by decreasing energy and water wastage. Only sustainable and locally available materials are used. Now the team faces one challenge: funding the project.
